The Aug. 15 anniversary show will be held at the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, N.Y., the original Woodstock concert site. Lineup includes Jefferson Starship, Big Brother & the Holding Company, Levon Helm (former member of the Band), Country Joe McDonald and Tom Constanten (former Grateful Dead keyboardist).
  • WoodFest ’09 Music & Arts Festival, Aug. 14-16, Davis, Okla. The family-friendly concerts, to be held at the Washita Hideaway, will feature tribute bands immortalizing such key artists of the ’60s as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Santana, Pink Floyd, the Doors, Led Zeppelin, the Grateful Dead and Stevie Nicks. Free for children under age 12.
  • West Fest, Oct. 25, San Francisco. The free concert, to be held at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park, will include appearances by Country Joe McDonald, Denny Laine, Lester Chambers, Barry “the Fish” Melton, the Edwin Hawkins Singers and many more. In honor of 1969 Woodstock headliner Jimi Hendrix, 3,000 guitar players will attempt to break the world’s record for the largest guitar ensemble playing “Purple Haze” at the same time.

Exhibits

  • Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland. “Woodstock: The 40th Anniversary,” through Nov. 29, showcases a variety of artifacts from Woodstock executive producer Michael Lang and many of the artists who appeared at the festival. Highlights include the original stage plans, clothing worn by John Sebastian and Stephen Stills, posters and contracts.
  • Newseum, Washington, D.C. The museum devoted to news presents “Woodstock at 40: The Rise of Music Journalism,” through Oct. 31. The exhibit features rarely seen photographs and artifacts from the festival, such as an original Woodstock press pass, press kit and festival tickets. Video interviews with top music journalists explain the lasting effect the festival had on music reporting.
