Family to Family

Pam Koner was reading the newspaper one Sunday when she was struck by a photograph. The picture was of a young girl sitting on a mattress eating her only meal of the day. That picture moved her first to tears and then to action.

Driven by the image, Koner came up with an idea to connect families in need with donor families. Today her nonprofit Family-to-Family connects more than 600 sponsor and recipient families in communities across the nation.

This year, Sept. 11 will be a day of remembering, but it will also be a time for hundreds of thousands of Americans to serve their communities. If you’re interested in volunteering, visit 911dayofservice.org, nationalservice.gov or serve.gov.
