It was 11-year-old Maria Pepe’s presence on a New Jersey baseball field that resulted in the first girls being allowed to officially play Little League—two years later. In 1972, Pepe was asked to leave her boys’ team and NOW took up the cause. Pepe’s case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of little girls playing Little League baseball.
