A New Start in Nursing

After working for Ford Motor Company in Michigan for 29 years, Rick Flanary, 52, is back in school training to become a registered nurse.

While unemployment is on the rise in Michigan, particularly in the automotive sector, the statewide nursing shortage is expected to hit 7,000 by 2010. One innovative program, Displaced Auto Workers for Nursing (DAWN), offers accelerated training for autoworkers to become registered nurses.

Launched in 2007, Michigan's No Worker Left Behind Program is working to retrain Michigan's workforce in a variety of industry sectors, including health care, the film industry, green jobs, and small-business ownership.
