Q. When I turn 62, can I claim spousal benefits on my husband’s account, then switch over to my own account and get full benefits when I reach my full retirement age?

A. No. If your spouse is already receiving retirement benefits, you can file for a spousal benefit at age 62. At the same time, you must also file for your own retirement benefit, which will be permanently reduced because you are taking it before your full retirement age. Social Security always pays your own benefit first. If you are due additional benefits, you will get a combination of benefits equaling the higher spouse’s benefit.
