Social Security and Marrying Late in Life

Source: AARP Bulletin Today | August 27, 2008

Q. My fiancé is age 88 and I am 72. We each receive Social Security under our own earnings record. If we marry and then my husband dies in less than 10 years, will I be able to receive his Social Security amount instead of my own? His monthly amount is more than mine.

A. Yes. If you are married for at least nine months before your husband dies, you will be eligible for Social Security survivor benefits based on your husband’s work record. Since you have reached full retirement age, you’d likely receive 100 percent of your husband’s benefit amount. For more information on survivor benefits, go to www.ssa.gov/pubs/10084.html#3.
