Q. My husband and I have been married for 42 years. He's 64 and I'm 62. I don't have enough credits to earn Social Security on my own. Can I receive benefits now on his record even if he is not yet retired?
A. No. If your husband were at full retirement age, he could file for and then suspend his Social Security benefit, and at that time, you could receive a spousal benefit. But because he is only 64, he cannot take advantage of what’s known as voluntary suspension—filing for and then suspending his retirement benefit.
