Ask the Experts:
Can I draw Social Security benefits from my second husband?

Q. I’m 65, single and have been married twice—10 years to my first husband and 15 years to the second. I elected to draw Social Security from my first husband when he was 62. Can I change and draw benefits from my second husband, who is now 65?

A. Yes, you’re eligible to receive benefits as a divorced spouse from your second husband, since you were married to him for at least 10 years and you are not currently married. You’ll have to make the change at your local Social Security office. For more on divorce and Social Security benefits, go online at www.ssa.gov/gethelp1.htm.
