A Quick Guide to IRS Rebates

You qualify for an economic stimulus rebate if you received at least $3,000 from Social Security benefits, veterans benefits or earned income in 2007 (or any combination of these). Depending on your earned income, rebates will range from $300 to $600 ($600 to $1,200 for couples).

To obtain payment, you must file a federal tax return. If you do not normally file, the IRS will send you a 1040A form to fill out, and it will figure your rebate amount after you file. Most checks will be sent in May or June.

To contact the IRS or IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center sites, call 1-800-829-1040 or go to www.IRS.gov. For details on how to fill out the tax form, go to www.aarp.org/stimulus. To find an AARP Tax-Aide volunteer tax preparation site, call 1-888-227-7669 toll free or go to www.aarp.org/taxaide. To find Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites, call 1-800-906-9887.
