Take a walk – As a member of the state health department’s Healthy Ohio advisory council, AARP Ohio has joined an effort to get more than 100,000 people to walk at least a mile on May 21. Participants can walk on their own or in one of many fitness events organized by schools, businesses, churches and neighborhoods. In addition, AARP Ohio, the National Recreation and Park Association and the Medical Fitness Association are cosponsoring 10-week walking programs starting in May in Mansfield, Westerville and Worthington. For details, go to www.aarp.org/oh. For fitness tips or to learn how to organize a walking program in your community, visit www.aarp.org /walking.

Take notice – As lawmakers in Ohio and Minnesota consider health care reform during their current legislative sessions, AARP Ohio and AARP Minnesota will share findings from recent surveys showing that members overwhelmingly support expanding affordable coverage. More than half of Minnesota respondents said that improving access to affordable, quality health care should be a top priority for the governor and legislature this year. In Ohio, nine in 10 respondents said it is either extremely or very important to make health care more affordable for all residents. For more findings from the two surveys, visit www.aarp.org/mn and www.aarp.org/oh.

Speaking out – AARP national president-elect Jennie Chin Hansen will discuss the Divided We Fail platform at a City Club of Cleveland luncheon on March 19. In keeping with the club’s tradition, the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions. The event will be broadcast to more than 40 states on PBS and Time Warner stations. The Divided We Fail initiative seeks commitments from lawmakers to work on bipartisan solutions for affordable, quality health care and lifelong financial security. The effort is in high gear in Ohio.
