Jul. 22, 2008 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) -- GULFPORT -- It's not too late for seniors and those who receive VA benefits or a retired railroad worker's pension to get their economic stimulus payment.
Those who don't file federal income tax because of lower income can attend a free stimulus payment return preparation workshop 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at the Isaiah Fredericks Community Center, 3312 Martin Luther King Drive, in Gulfport.
"You can drop in at any time between those hours," said Mike Dobzinski, spokesman for the Internal Revenue Service in Florida. "It's first come, first served, and no appointment is necessary."
To receive an economic stimulus payment, this year you need to file Form 1040A with the IRS. This includes people who receive at least $3,000 in earnings and/or benefits from Social Security, VA disability or a retired railroad worker's pension.
If you are attending the workshop, you should take:
--A picture ID or identity document.
--Verification of the Social Security number of the taxpayer, the spouse and qualifying children, if applicable.
--One of the following for everyone listed on the tax return: Social Security card or a letter or notice from Social Security or the Veterans Administration reflecting the Social Security number.
--Form 1099 from Social Security or the Veterans Administration or, if 1099 is not available, a monthly statement and/or the amount of their monthly benefits.
--Proof of any other income, taxable or nontaxable.
