AARP in Your State

October 2009

Easy living  — A 10-month project aimed at transforming one American city so its residents enjoy longer, better and healthier lives culminates Oct. 13 in Albert Lea, Minn.

Experts began working with town leaders in January to improve the way residents eat, work, exercise and play. The community is encouraging people to bike and walk, placing signs in grocery stores to help residents identify healthy food choices, and cultivating social ties through community gardens, cooking classes and other activities.

Tune in — The state's top health care policymakers will meet for a roundtable discussion in the Twin Cities on Sept. 14. AARP will webcast the event and invites members to log onto www.aarp.org/mn to listen to comments.

Health care reform is AARP's top legislative priority nationwide this year. In Minnesota, AARP is bringing together business leaders, consumer groups, elected officials and health care experts to recommend ways to create sustainable, affordable health care programs.
