The Lafayette Parish school system has announced that registration for kindergarten, first-time public school and preschool students will be held Wednesday.

Registration will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at all public schools in the parish.

If parents are uncertain about which schools their children will be attending, they can contact the Child Welfare and Attendance Office at (337) 521-7089 for information on their home school zones.

Kindergarten entrance age is 5 years old by Sept. 30, and parents registering children for kindergarten should bring the children’s birth certificates, immunization records and proof of residency.

Social security cards are also recommended, and applications for birth certificates will be available at registration sites.

Copies of immunization records should be available wherever the shots were given.

Proof of residency includes utility bills with name and physical home address.

For parents needing more time to gather the required documents, another registration day is scheduled for July 28.

The pre-school programs for which parents can register on Wednesday include LA-4, Starting Points, Even Start, HIPPY and Head Start.

To register for LA-4 and Starting Points, children must be 4 years old by Sept. 30, and proof of parents’ income is needed in addition to birth certificates, immunization records and the recommended social security card.

For more information about Even Start and HIPPY programs, call (337) 267-3416 and for information about the LA-4, Starting Points and Head Start programs, call (337) 521-7162.

Parents seeking more information about kindergarten can call their principals.
