Halt the ax — Services that help state residents continue to live at home as they age have been scaled back repeatedly in state budget cuts and now are on the chopping block again. Also in jeopardy: support for grandparents raising grandchildren.
The state spends most of its long-term care funds on nursing home care. Only 8 percent of such funding pays for home- and community-based services, and more than 20,000 people are on waiting lists. Yet services delivered in people's homes typically are more cost-effective than nursing home care, AARP advocates say.
AARP Kentucky will hold a rally at the state Capitol to oppose further cuts. To help with the rally—tentatively slated for Nov. 16—or to find out how to show your support, call 1-866-295-7275 toll-free, visit www.aarp.org/ky, or e-mail kyaarp@aarp.org.
Act locally — AARP volunteers stand ready to present information on health care reform to civic groups, faith-based communities and business organizations throughout Kentucky.
Millions of Americans lack access to affordable health care, and many are just one medical emergency away from bankruptcy. Others face the prospect of having their premiums double over the next 10 years—or losing coverage altogether.
AARP is asking members to urge their U.S. senators and representatives to address these issues. To get involved—or to request a presentation for your group—go to www.aarp.org/ky, send an e-mail to aarpky@aarp.org or call 1-866-295-7275 toll-free.
