BRIEF: Taxes due

Nov. 6, 2009 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) -- Property owners must make their third of four property tax payments Friday in Madison County and their final payment Tuesday in St. Clair County.

Madison County Treasurer Fred Bathon's office is accepting payments until 4:30 p.m. Friday through the pay-by-phone system, (877)455-3729, or in person at 157 N. Main St. in Edwardsville. Taxpayers can pay with cash, check, money order or credit card.

Online payments at www.co.madison.il.us are due at midnight and mail must be postmarked Friday.

A convenience charge will be applied for phone and online credit card payments. The charge varies depending on the amount of the property tax payment. MasterCard,Visa, Discover and American Express (NYSE:AXP) are acceptable.

This is the first tax year that Madison County has split property owner's property taxes into fourths. The last installment is due Jan. 6, 2010.

The fourth and final payment is due Jan. 6.

St. Clair County property owners have until Tuesday to pay the second and final installment on their 2008 property taxes. After Tuesday penalties will be assessed.
