Dolores J. Surdukan (1930-2008)
CEDAR FALLS -- Dolores J. Surdukan, 77, of Cedar Falls, died Feb. 7, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo.
She was born Aug. 3, 1930, in Eden Valley, Minn., daughter of Earl and Leona Fink Broberg. She married Gabriel Surdukan on March 14, 1953, in San Francisco. He died Oct. 25, 1999.
Mrs. Surdukan was a homemaker.
Survived by: two sons, Michael of Charles City and David (Karen) of Anna, Texas; two daughters, Karen (Steve) Volk of Solon and Lisa (Louis) Zubak of Waterloo; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, David (Barb) Broberg of Woodbury, Minn.; and a sister, Karen (Ron) Lamberg of Hasting, Minn.
Services: 10:30a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in Fort Snelling Cemetery, Minnesota. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Richardson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edith J. Cooley (1927-2008)
HIAWATHA -- Edith J. Cooley, 80, of 19 Aloha Dr., Hiawatha, died March 13, 2008 at St. Luke's Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was born June 8, 1927, in Denver, daughter of Fredrich and Ida Nolting. She was married to Charles L. Cooley on July 11, 1947, in Waterloo, by the Rev. H. H. Diers.
She graduated from East High School in Waterloo, graduated with a teaching degree from Wartburg College in 1947, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. She retired from teaching in 1989.
Survivors include her husband, Charles L. Cooley of Hiawatha; four sons, David of Grand Canyon, Ariz., Richard of La Monte, Mo., Dennis of Waterloo and Douglas of Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Fred Nolting of Denton, Texas, Wendell Nolting of Cedar Falls and Eldon Nolting of Gilbert, Minn., and a sister, Eunice Lee of Hiawatha.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Warren Nolting; a sister, Elaine Powers; and a granddaughter, Jolene Richardson.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 17, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, where the family are members, with burial in the Garden of Memories, Waterloo.
Relatives and friends may call today, March 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids.

Shirley McAhren (1940-2008)
WATERLOO -- Shirley Mae Shirlotte McAhren, 67, of Waterloo, died Monday, March 10, at her home. She was born July 19, 1940, in rural Montgomery Township, Mo., daughter of John and Ruby Crawford Campbell. She married Larry McAhren on Aug. 6, 1966, in Sac City.
Mrs. McAhren was a housewife.
Survived by: her husband; two sons, Michael (Janet) and Robin, both of Waterloo; three daughters, Sharla McAhren of Waterloo, Patty McAhren of Dysart and Lorie (Merritt) Terrill of Cedar Rapids; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three brothers, Roland (Marge) Campbell of Naples, Fla., Ronnie (Lorraine) Campbell of New Jersey and Terry (Kandy) Campbell of Cedar Rapids; and a sister, Wanda (Red) Whalen of Cedar Rapids.
Preceded in death by: two sisters, Reatha Campbell and Janice Sykes.

Gaylin H. Knoll (1922-2008)
TRAER -- Gaylin H. Knoll, 85, of Traer, died Friday, March 14, at his home after an extended illness. He was born May 29, 1922, in Bristow, son of Merlin and Gladys Chapman Knoll McKinney. On April 19, 1942, he married LaVerne Nahrgang in Kirksville, Mo.
He received his education in the Waterloo school system. Mr. Knoll and his wife made their home in State Center before moving to Hudson where they live for several years. He was employed at Viking Pump and also drove semi for Ruan Trucking.
He was a member of the Hudson Community Church and the Masonic Lodge.
Survived by: his wife; a daughter, Marlys Damman of Richardson, Texas; three grandchildren, Bob, Cathy and Steven; six great-grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Adam, Blake, Malory and Jessica; a sister, Miriam (Chuck) Canfield of Blairstown; five half brothers, Dean McKinney of Lowell, Ark., Russell Knoll of Cedar Falls, Robert Knoll of Brooklyn Center, Minn., David Knoll of Red Wing, Minn., and Marvin Knoll of Minneapolis; and two half sisters, Maralee (Peter) d'Albertis of Minneapolis and Merleen (Jon) DeVries of Waverly.
Preceded in death by: his parents.

Archie A. Clark Jr. (1934-2008)
WATERLOO -- Archie Arthur Clark Jr., 73, of Des Moines, formerly of Waterloo, died March 7 in Des Moines.
He was born May 15, 1934, in Waterloo, son of Archie A. Clark Sr. and Nina Bell Bates. He married Lucinda M. Clark, and she preceded him in death.
Mr. Clark served in the U.S. Armed Forces and was a self-taught craftsman and a mechanic.
Survived by: nine sons, Michael Solomon, Myron Carr and LaVertous Haygood, all of Des Moines, Archie L. Clark III (Michelle), William (Tamika) Clark, Terrance Clark-Plaid and Raymond Carr, all of Minneapolis, Theodore Carr of Compton, Calif., and Trent Clark-Lee (Amanda) of Dallas; seven daughters, Pamela Clark, Tammy Clark and Novita Haygood, all of Des Moines, Laurie Ann Perry of Minneapolis, Tonia Clark-Logan and Twoana (John "Tony") Hammond, both of Kansas City, Mo., and Carletta Haygood of Phoenix; a brother, William (Carolyn) Jefferson of Waterloo; 40 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: two daughters, Mina and Victoria Clark; and a grandson.

Craig Leon Thomas
Craig Leon Thomas was born Aug. 5, 1958, at Keosauqua Memorial Hospital, Van Buren County, the son of Donald O. and Marylyn Jane Thomas, living near Stockport. At the age of 2 1/2 the family moved to Cedar Falls Craig attended Lincoln Elementary and Cedar Falls High School, graduating with the class of 1976. He had worked in the food industry his entire life, starting at Kings Food Host Restaurant and then in 1975 became employed by Eagle Foods grocery store. When they closed and left the area he went to work for Martin Bros. Distributing until the present time. It was when he was working at Eagles that he met his wife to be, Marie Grapp. They were married Oct. 27, 1984, in Cedar Falls. Their only child, Tyler, was born March 15, 1993.
In 1999 Craig was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, which later caused pulmonary fibrosis of the lungs. In 2004 he was placed on the waiting list for a double lung transplant. His one chance for an extension of life came on Jan. 5, 2008, and he underwent successful surgery at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Ill., but due to several complications he went to be with our Lord on March 11, 2008.
His survivors are his dear wife, Marie, and son, Tyler, of Waterloo; his mother, M. Jane Thomas of Cedar Falls; three sisters, Connie Erne of Cedar Falls, Cherie Kreger of Jesup and Cindie Frazer of Waterloo. Also nieces, Angie Wilson of the U.S. Navy just returned from Iraq, Aimee Erne of Cedar Falls, Janel Thomas of Waterloo and Jill (Tim) Henry of Tucsan, Ariz.; two nephews, Chris Frazer of Iowa City and David Kreger of Cedar Falls; and great-nephew, Sean T. Taylor of the U. S. Navy, Jacksonville, Fla.
His extended family, Lyle and Darlene Grapp, Marie's parents, of Waterloo; Marie's sisters, Deb (Maynard) Bochman of Allison, Diane Goeke of Deerfield, Ill., Darla (Gene) Thompson and Marlee (Jerry) Storey, both of Waterloo, many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Don Thomas, in 1979; his uncles, Forrest Thomas, Vaughn Thomas and Don E. Moore; his aunt, Janet Kistler, and grandparents, Barney and Mable Moore (Lange) and Clarence and Winnie Thomas.
Craig was known as an "all around good guy" and a very hard worker who strove for perfection. Before his illness, he loved playing softball and was an avid fan of all sports, especially watching the Chicago Cubs and enjoyed several games at Wrigley Field. Also, a special passion was NASCAR and sprint (NYSE:S) (NYSE:FON) car racing and was a special friend of Wayne Johnson, a driver at Knoxville Raceway.
Craig loved his family deeply and took great pride in watching his son Tyler competing in sports. He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.
Craig was a Christian who loved and trusted in the Lord and said he was ready to go to his heavenly home. He had fought the good fight and had kept the faith, and he knew Jesus was waiting to meet him. Craig's family wishes to thank you for your deep concern, many prayers and monetary gifts, given over the years. Your kindnesses will not be forgotten.
Funeral services for Craig will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Waterloo, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Falls. Public visitation will be from 4 until 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway and continue for one hour before services at the church on Tuesday.

Jeanne D. Brown
WATERLOO -- Jeanne D. Brown, 90, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Feb. 3, at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center.
She was born Nov. 10, 1917, in Minneapolis, daughter of Ray O. and Dorothy Peterson Berry. She married James Leslie Brown on Aug. 30, 1941, in Waterloo. He died March 27, 1996.
Jeanne was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. The Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier was an integral part of Jeanne's life and family. Her grandfather, Arthur W. Peterson was treasurer and general manager of the Waterloo Evening Courier at the time of his death on Sept. 25, 1924. Jeanne's two sons, David Leslie Brown and Douglas Richard Brown, both worked for the Waterloo Daily Courier, at or near the time of their deaths. David, who died on June 8, 1997, worked as a reporter and editor for the Des Moines Register and the Waterloo Daily Courier. Douglas, who died July 26, 2002, was copy editor at the Waterloo Daily Courier.
Jeanne is survived by her daughter, Mary Louise Brown of Sante Fe, N.M.; her two granddaughters, Christie (John) Moran of Houston and Sarah (Casey) Dodd of Des Moines.
Memorial Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway.

WATERLOO -- Clifford Tucker, 31, of 800 Sumner St., died Tuesday, March 11, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, of natural causes.
He was born Jan. 17, 1977, in Waterloo, son of Clifford Owen Greer and Mary Tucker.
Survived by: his mother, Mary Tucker (Harrison Zanders) of Waterloo; his father, Clifford O. Greer of Waterloo; maternal grandfather, James (Elnora) Tucker of Waterloo; paternal grandfather, Leroy Greer of Waterloo; two sons, Clifford M. Tucker Jr. of Cedar Rapids and A'daris T. Washington-Tucker of Waterloo; a brother, Frank Spencer III of Chicago; a sister, Rakisha Tucker of Waterloo; and a special friend, Sarah Taylor of Waterloo.

WATERLOO -- Corey T. "Gramps" Wright, 28, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, March 11, in Sumner, cause of death pending state medical examiner's report.
He was born July 10, 1979, in Iowa City, son of Larry Wright and Bobbye Smith Pryor.
He was formerly employed with Service Roofing Co.
Survived by: his mother, Bobbye (Richard) Pryor of Waterloo; a special friend, Jennifer Bucknell of Sumner; his father, Larry Wright of Albuquerque, N.M.; four daughters, Quaynisha Jean Wright and Tyanna Raighlyn Teetzen, both of Waterloo, and Oceanna Marie Wright and Annaleah Divinity Wright, both of Sumner; two sons, Aundry Jordan of Albuquerque and Taebien Lawrence of Sumner; a brother, Derrick (Brian) Wright of Cedar Falls; a stepbrother, Eric A. Luvern C. Kolbet (1917-2008)
CHARLES CITY -- Luvern Charles Kolbet, 90, of Belmond, formerly of Charles City, died Thursday, March 13, at Belmond Health Care Center.
He was born Dec. 7, 1917, in Alta Vista, son of John and Caroline Glaser Kolbet. On May 1, 1946, he married Virginia Nixt at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Roseville. She died March 28, 2004.
Mr. Kolbet served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had farmed in the Alta Vista and Marble Rock areas, retiring in 1994.
Survived by: five daughters, Paula Kolbet of Sioux City, Marlene (Daniel) Greeny of Allen, Neb., Nancy (Michael) Hogle of Manteca, Calif., Karen (Michael) Newman of Clarion and Kimberly (Brian) Mason of Belmond; two sons, Steven (Carolyn Hedland) of Marble Rock and Charles (Gloria) of Manchester; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois (Jack) McAvoy of Elma and Lola (Bill) Boss of Charles City.
Preceded in death by: a great-grandson; three brothers, Leonard, Louis and Linus; and a sister, Luella Phippen.

Joan Petrea Sindlinger (1930-2008)
CEDAR FALLS -- Joan Petrea Sindlinger, 77, of Cedar Falls, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Friday, March 14, 2008. She was born April 16, 1930, in Cedar Falls, daughter of Svend Marinus Jochumsen Beck and Fredericka Pedersen Beck. She was both baptized and confirmed at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Waterloo. She married William W. Sindlinger on September 1, 1949 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Joan graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1947, and attended both Iowa State Teacher's College and Grandview College.
She worked at UNI before her retirement. She was also half owner of the Brass Bucket Antique Shop in Cedar Falls. She was a member of Nazareth Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, P.E.O. Chapter OF, Waterloo, Funtique Questors Club, and was a charter member of the Cedar Valley Danes.
Survivors include her husband; a son, William Dale Sindlinger (Ann Bergstrom), of Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Anne Petrea (Neale) Lehmkuhl, of Bloomington, Ill.; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Flores Sindlinger of Lake Oswego, Ore.; and six grandchildren, William Tucker and Alexandria Sindlinger of Cedar Rapids, Erik Christian and Laura Petrea Lehmkuhl of Bloomington, Ill., and Sarah Christine and Joseph Matthew Sindlinger of Lake Oswego, Ore.; a brother Robert (Jean) Beck of Cedar Falls; and many nieces and nephews and extended family members.
Joan was preceded in death by parents; a son, Matthew Parker Sindlinger (2002); a grandson, Samuel Parker Sindlinger (2000); and her sister Betty Uris McGill (2005).

Russell T. Jacklin (1925-2008)
WATERLOO -- Russell Thomas Jacklin, 82, of Waterloo, died Saturday, March 15, at Allen Memorial Hospital of a heart attack.
He was born June 26, 1925, in Waterloo, son of John Thomas and Emma Eliza Christina Wacherhahn Jacklin. On Oct. 10, 1948, he married Elaine Perrigo at Trinity Lutheran Church, Waterloo.
He graduated from East High School in 1942 and then entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II and was ivolved in the Normandy invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. Following his discharge he returned to Waterloo where he studied accounting.
Mr. Jacklin was employed for 30 years for Hoxie Fruit Company as office manager. He then took a job as an accountant for Anderson Enterprises where he worked until July 2007 when his health declined.
He was a former member of First Lutheran Church, Waterloo, until transferring his membership to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Evansdale. Mr. Jacklin was former president of the Waterloo Association of Credit Management.
Survived by: his wife; two granddaughters, Nichole and Sabrina; and a great-granddaughter, Di Anna.
Preceded in death by: his parents; a son, John, in February 2006; a brother, the Rev. John; and two sisters, Doris Jacklin and Arlene Tharp.

APLINGTON -- Lena A. Elliott, 98, of Aplington, died Friday, March 14, at Maple Manor Village, Aplington, of natural causes.
She was born July 7, 1909, near Austinville, in Butler County, daughter of Arend and Bena Harken Neymeyer. On Jan. 11, 1929, she married Lyle B. Elliott in Waterloo. He preceded her in death.
She graduated from Aplington High School in 1927. After graduation she began working as a seamstress. She was a homemaker and continued working as a seamstress.
Survived by: a daughter-in-law, Grace Elliott of Waterloo; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Preceded in death by: two sons, James and Allan; a daughter, Alida Grinde; two grandchildren; a son-in-law, John Grinde; two brothers, Jacob and Ubbe Neymayer; and a sister, Margaret Neymeyer.

Barbara J. Reisinger (1948-2008)
TRAER -- Barbara Jean Reisinger, 60, of Traer, formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, March 14, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of cancer.
She was born Jan. 12, 1948, in Waterloo, daughter of Vernon and Joye Powell Parsons. In August 1964 she married Gary Reisinger at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, and they later divorced.
She attended East High School. She was employed at Powers Manufacturing; Bradfield's Grocery and currently in the deli at the Hy-Vee, Waterloo.
Survived by: her mother, Joye Marquart of Waterloo; a son, Jonney of Old Orchid Beach, Maine; a daughter, Brenda Miller of Willcox, Ariz.; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother, Gayle Parsons of Wright City, Mo.; and three sisters, Sharon Thompson of Waterloo, Linda Price of Traer and Christina Stalzer of Dike.

Aileen J. Solheim (1924-2008)
WAVERLY -- Aileen J. Solheim, 83, of Waverly, died Friday, March 14, at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn., of complications following surgery.
She was born Aug. 10, 1924, in Sheboygan, Wis., daughter of Edgar and Sylvia Burhop Hall. She married J. Russell Solheim on Dec. 27, 1943, in Milwaukee.
She graduated from Riverside High School, Milwaukee, in 1942, and then attended the University of Wisconsin. She started A & R Air Purification in 1988 and served as a sales manager for Alpine Industries.
Survived by: six sons, Dick (Lynn) of Littleton, Colo., Chuck (Tina Petersen) of Davenport, Dennis (Melba) of Inverness, Ill., Dave (Jean) of Alexandria, Minn., Ken of Phoenix and Keith of Bremerton, Wash.; a daughter, Gini (Tom) Halliwell of Hayden, Idaho; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenneth Hall of Bellevue, Fla.; and J. Mahlon J. Phelps (1938-2008)
VINTON -- Mahlon Jack Phelps, 69, of Vinton, died at home Saturday, March 8, of cancer.
He was born Nov. 7, 1938, at home in rural Black Hawk County, son of James Francis and Lois Abbott Phelps. He married Carole Lea Selk on April 3, 1960, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Mr. Phelps attended Vinton High School. He had worked as a welder at Perfex, a cook at the county home and as an interstate maintenance technician. He also worked for many years in general sales and was an aspiring children's author, retiring in 2000.
Survivors include: his wife; two sons, James (Kathy) of Shellsburg and Thomas Selk (Duska) of Vinton; three daughters, Tammy Hobbs and Melissa Ann Wiese, both of Vinton, and Shelly Mather of Shellsburg; nine grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.
Preceded in death by: a daughter-in-law, Jo Phelps.

Charles H. Heidemann (1935-2008)
WATERLOO -- Charles Henry Heidemann, 72, of Waterloo, formerly of Manchester, died Tuesday, March 4, at Covenant Medical Center of a heart attack.
He was born April 28, 1935, in Lansing, son of Harold W. Sr. and Pearl Mae Ingles Heidemann. He married Patricia Mae Kelly on Aug. 25, 1957, in Memphis, Mo., and they later divorced.
Mr. Heidemann worked on a farm near Manchester.
Survivors include: a son, Jeffrey (Connie) of Fairbank; a daughter, Pamela Schoepske of Juneau, Alaska; three grandchildren; a sister, Bette (Jim) Heidemann Carter of Harpers Ferry; and a brother, Harold of Mount Vernon.
Preceded in death by: two sisters, Dorothy Welper and Ruth Cole.
There will be no services or visitation. His body has been cremated and will be inurned in Mays Prairie Cemetery, Lansing. Locke Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Marian Mortenson
ACKLEY/VINTON -- Marian Mortenson, age 93, of Lake City, Minn., passed away Saturday, March 8, 2008, at the Lake City Nursing Home.
Marian was born April 27, 1914, in Tamarack, Wis., to Julius and Mathilda (Swenson) Nelson. Marian grew up in North Branch, Wis. She married Douglas Mortenson June 4, 1941, at the Elk Creek Lutheran Church Parsonage in North Branch. She lived in Eau Claire, Wis., where she worked at two defense plants while her husband served in the U.S. Army during World War II. They then moved to Ackley, where they lived for 20 years, after that they moved to Vinton, and Osseo, Wis. Her husband Douglas passed away in 1987. In 2002 Marian moved to Lake City. She was a member of the Osseo United Church of Christ.
Marian is survived by two sons, John (Lori) of Lake City and Mark (Jill) of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Amy (Greg) Pitts of Portland, Ore., Cody Mortenson of Lake City and Heather (Charles) Plaetz of Zumbrota, Minn.; three brothers, Raymond (Marge) Nelson and Walter Nelson, both of Beloit, Wis., and Joe (Georgia) Nelson of Pleasantville, Wis. She was preceded in death by her husband; six brothers, Martin, Alvin, Lawrence, Thomas, Rueban and Victor; and three sisters, Evelyn Anderson, Inga Lind and Elaine Nysven.
Funeral services are today, March 11, at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Lake City with the Rev. Darren Paulson officiating. Burial will be held in the spring at the Osseo cemetery. Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel, Lake City, is in charge of arrangements.
Ernest D. Bell (1930-2008)
INDEPENDENCE -- Ernest D. Bell, 77, of Independence, died Monday, March 10, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, following a short illness.
He was born Oct. 18, 1930, in Cedar Rapids, son of Gilbert and Goldie Decker Bell. On June 4, 1977, he married June V. Waitman at Hope Wesleyan Church, Independence.
Mr. Bell graduated from a Cedar Rapids high school and attended Life Bible College, Los Angeles. Following the completion of his education he returned to Cedar Rapids where he was employed with Rockwell Collins Manufacturing Co., retiring in 1985.
Survivors include: his wife; two daughters, De Anna (Rick) Elsberry of Marshalltown and Donna Keegan of Tulsa, Okla.; four sons, James (Berta) of Red Wing, Minn., Jerry (Andrea) of Colorado Springs, Colo., Tony (Jan) of Parkersburg and Harley of California; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ellyn Fishbaugher of Preston, Minn., and Jane Carpenter of Cedar Rapids; and a brother, Eardley "George" of Cedar Rapids.
Preceded in death by: a sister, Bernadette Bell; and three brothers, John, Elwyn and Gilbert "Pete."

Edwin N. Squires Jr. (1928-2008)
CRESCO -- Edwin N. Squires Jr., 79, of Cresco, died Sunday, March 9, at Residential Care Facility, Cresco, following a lengthy illness.
He was born May 15, 1928, in Lake City, son of Edwin N. Sr. and Myrel Squires. He married Bette C. Cross in 1950.
Mr. Squires graduated from Simpson College, Indianola, in 1950, and earned his master's degree in education from Drake University in 1959. He was a teacher in Linden, and later taught in the Howard-Winneshiek School District for 36 years. He also coached, refereed, and started track meets for 25 years, and was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survived by: his wife.
Preceded in death by: two brothers; and two sons, Stephen and Vincent.
His body was donated to medical science. Private family services will be held at a later date. Lindstrom Funeral Home, Cresco, handled the arrangements.

WATERLOO -- Ricky K. "Rick" LeQuatte, 61, of Waterloo, died Saturday, March 8, at Allen Hospital of esophageal cancer.
He was born Jan. 28, 1947, in Waterloo, son of Lloyd "Pat" and Lena Pauline Hanson LeQuatte. He married Susan M. Lown on Feb. 5, 1966, at St. Edward Catholic Church, Waterloo.
Mr. LeQuatte was a 1965 graduate of Waterloo West High School and was employed with the city of Waterloo in parking maintenance for 30 years, retiring in 2006. He served with the U.S. Army special forces unit in Germany from 1966 to 1968, and was a lifetime member of Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and a member of the military honor guard.
Survivors include: his wife; two daughters, Teresa (Ken) Shock of Waterloo and Dawn (Mark) Sculco of Dillon, Colo.; three grandchildren, Desiree, Dalton and Isabelle Shock, all of Waterloo; his mother of Cocoa, Fla.; and a brother, Mike (Karen) of Cocoa.

CEDAR FALLS -- Sandra "Sandie" Kay Webrand, 69, of Cedar Falls, died at home Sunday, March 9.
She was born July 24, 1938, in Waterloo, daughter of Merle and Maude Gould Horner. She married James Webrand on Nov. 22, 1963, in Preston, Minn.
Mrs. Webrand was employed by the American Red Cross for 36 years, retiring Dec. 31, 1993.

Paul Julion Jr. (1934-2008)
WATERLOO -- Paul Julion Jr., 73, of Waterloo, died at home Saturday, March 8, of natural causes.
He was born Dec. 10, 1934, in Jonestown, Miss., son of Paul Julion Sr. and Willie Mae Kelly. He married Lucille Brown in September 1954 in Chicago.
Mr. Julion was formerly employed at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, in the plant power department from 1972 to 1999, when he retired.
Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Dora Julion of Chicago and Valerie Julion of Toledo, Ohio; two sons, Charles (Charlotte) and Ivy (Jean), both of Waterloo; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bernice Brown of Jonestown.

WATERLOO -- Richard W. Smith, 84, of Waterloo, died Monday, March 10, at Allen Hospital.
He was born March 13, 1923, in Waterloo, son of Harlan G. and Nancy L. Obiel Smith. He married Bonnie L. Marguand in May 1942 in Louisiana. They later divorced. He then married Ida Yearling in 1993.
Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was employed at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 32 years, retiring in 1980.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, Richard E. (Nancy) of Waterloo and Robert A. of Aitkin, Minn.; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a son, Ronald; a daughter, Nancy Smith; two brothers, Albert and Melvin Smith; and a sister, Nancy Smith.

William P. Hodges (1927-2008)
WATERLOO -- William P. Hodges, also known as "Seventeen" or "Bill," 81, of Waterloo, died Friday, March 7, at the VA Medical Center, Iowa City.
He was born Feb. 24, 1927, in Lexington, Miss., son of Amy Hodges. His father died before he was born. He married Janie Middleton, and they later divorced. He married Dorothy Moore, and they later divorced. On March 7, 1975, he married Shirley Gibson.
Mr. Hodges was a butcher for Rath Packing Co., retiring in 1967. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survived by: his wife of Sioux City; five daughters, Porcha Hodges of Waterloo, Victoria Thomas and Tierra Hodges, both of Sioux City, Alisa (Ted) Wiltshire of Chicago and Setira Hodges of Alaska; a son, Dennis of Waterloo; and three grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a son, William Carl; a sister, Margaret Hampton; and a half brother.

He was born Aug. 6, 1927, in Mason City, son of Guy and Tincy Wilkins Trebilcock. He married Willodeen L. Wearda on Sept. 5, 1948, in Mason City. She died May 21, 2002.
Mr. Trebilcock served in the U.S. Marines Corps, and prior to retirement was a salesman for Wood Products.

WAVERLY -- Olive Dorothy Austin, 90, of Waverly, died Tuesday, March 11, at Shell Rock Care Center, Shell Rock.
She was born Oct. 28, 1917, in Nerstrand, Minn., daughter of Harry and Mary Jane Gayther Beine. On Oct. 26, 1938, she married M.C. "Mez" Austin at United Methodist Church, Charles City.
Mrs. Austin graduated from Charles City High School in 1936, then helped her grandmother at the Plainfield Grocery Store until 1938. In 1957 she went to work at Harrison's Variety Store, where she managed the toy department for the next 20 years, retiring in 1979.
Survived by: her husband; two sons, Charles (Linda) of Waverly and Richard (Patricia) of Traverse City, Mich.; a daughter, Mary Jane Austin of Waverly; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was born July 28, 1935, in Waterloo, daughter of William Lawrence and Iona Shadman Kearney. She married Fred LaVerne Blankenship on Sept. 29, 1958, in Iowa City. He died July 16, 1986.

INDEPENDENCE -- Richard L. "Dick" Cameron, 83, of rural Independence, died Monday, March 10, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, following a sudden illness.
He was born Jan. 17, 1925, in Waterloo, son of Clifford and Zazelle T. Campagna Cameron. On Nov. 21, 1948, he married Mildred Mae "Millie" Alden at First Presbyterian Church, Independence,
Mr. Cameron graduated from high school in Independence in 1942, then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He farmed near Independence and also was an independent farm equipment dealer and operated Cameron Dirt Sales. He was formerly a Buchanan County supervisor.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, Craig (Patty) and Chris (Trisha), both of Independence; a daughter, Connie (Mark) Chase of Independence; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Kenneth L. Allers (1921-2008)
KEYSTONE -- Kenneth L. Allers, 87, of Keystone, died Monday, March 10, at Keystone Nursing Care Center following an extended illness.
He was born on a farm northwest of Keystone on Jan. 4, 1921, son of Ben and Agnes Havron Allers. On June 9, 1946, he married Lorna Jurgens at St. John Lutheran Church, Keystone.
Mr. Allers graduated from Keystone High School in 1939. He worked on the farm and drove trucks before entering the retail grocery store with his father and brother, Dale. They operated Allers Grocery and Locker for 43 years. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II in the European theater with the 9th Army Air Force. He was a county Legion commander, served on the Keystone City Council, was a park caretaker and had served as chairman of the "Ter Trees Committee."
Survived by: his wife; a daughter, Nancy (Gene) Owens of Cedar Rapids; a son, Kenneth (Deb) Allers of Woodbury, Minn.; and three grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: an infant sister; and a brother, Dale.

NEW HAMPTON -- Bernice D. Kramer, 81, of New Hampton, died Monday, March 10, at New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 29, 1926, daughter of Leo and Gertrude Dennison. She married Harold Kramer in Reno, Nev.
In 1971, she opened the Mode O'Day store.

READLYN -- Geraldine "Gerrie" Holmlund, 63, of Readlyn and Dade City, Fla., died Saturday, March 8, at Pasco Regional Medical Center, Dade City, of respiratory failure.
She was born Jan. 25, 1945, in Waterloo, daughter of James and Leona Chettinger Fitzpatrick. On Oct. 11, 1964, she married Ronald Holmlund at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Waterloo.
Mrs. Holmlund graduated from Waterloo Columbus High School. She worked at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community as a certified nurse's assistant for numerous years, retiring in 1990.
Survived by: her husband; two daughters, Michelle (Craig) Wolfensperger of Denver and Tammy (Brett) Walther of Waverly; three grandsons, Tyler Holmlund and Anthony and Adam Walther; a sister-in-law, Malena Fitzpatrick of Illinois; two brothers, Bill (Mary) Fitzpatrick of Waterloo, and her twin, Tom (Sheryl) Fitzpatrick of Gilbertville; numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

In the summer months, Gerrie enjoyed traveling around the country with Ron delivering motor homes to various locations. When the winter months came, she and Ron spent their time in Dade City. She loved spending time with her three beloved grandsons. They meant the world to her, and she cherished every moment with them.

DES MOINES -- Sophia T. Cordes Homan, 90, passed away, Monday, March 10, 2008, in Des Moines, where she had been living for the past 34 years. Our Loving Heavenly Father has called from this earthly pilgrimage, Sophia, daughter of Ludwig Cordes and Ida C. Matthies Cordes. Sophia was born on Aug. 1, 1917, in Grundy County, near Fern.
On Jan. 21, 1948, Sophia was united in marriage to Roy P. Homan of Ackley.
She is survived by her three children, (Jim) Merlyn Cordes of Des Moines and Linda Epley (Larry) and Gail Osborn (Doyle), all of Polk City; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters, three brothers and her husband, Roy P. Homan.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, March 13, at St. John's Church of Christ, 716 3rd Ave., Ackley. Family will visit with friends from 5 to 8 p.m., with 7 p.m. prayer service today at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens, Des Moines.
Krisanna M. Rhoades
POSTVILLE/CEDAR FALLS -- Krisanna Marie Rhoades of Crystal Lake, Ill., formerly of Postville and Cedar Falls, died Friday, March 7, 2008, at her home of cirrhosis.
She was born in Mason City on Sept. 30, 1951, daughter of Rodney and Mavis Jensen. She married Todd Rhoades on Aug. 19, 1972, in Cedar Falls.
Kris graduated from Cedar Falls High School and had a degree from Mercy Hospital, School of Radiology Technology, Iowa City. She was formerly employed at Provena St. Joseph's Hospital in Elgin, Ill.; Franciscan Skemp Health Care in La Crosse, Wis.; and Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.
Survivors include two daughters, Stacy and Josie, both of Chicago; her parents, Rodney and Mavis Jensen of Cedar Falls; and her sister, Tracie (Bert) Cantu of New Hartford.
Kris is preceded in death by her husband, Todd Rhoades.
A memorial service will be held at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, at 2 p.m. Friday, March 14.
Vickie Lynn Heidbreder-Grubbs
CHEYENNE, Wyo -- Vickie Lynn Heidbreder-Grubbs, 58, of Cheyenne, Wyo., died Saturday, March 1, 2008, in Cheyenne.
She was born Nov. 22, 1949, in Waterloo and had lived in Cheyenne for the past 25 years. Vickie was a Cheyenne City planner, and she loved animals.
Mrs. Heidbreder-Grubbs is survived by her husband, William Grubbs, who she married in March 1987.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Irene Heidbreder.
Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens under the direction of Wiederspahn-Radomsky Chapel. Memorial services at a later date.
Jeneane L. Boldt (1937-2008)
WATERLOO -- Jeneane L. "Jen" Boldt, 70, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Waterloo, died Monday, March 10, at Heritage Nursing and Rehab, Cedar Rapids, after a long illness.
She was born July 1, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, daughter of John and Dorothy Doyle King. She married Henry Boldt in 1957, in Cedar Rapids, and they were later divorced.
She was owner and operator of the Family Christian Hairstyling Shop, Waterloo, for many years.
Survived by: a daughter, Dori Weishaar of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Dorothy (Edward) Ceynar of Wyoming; two brothers, Nick King of Columbus, Ohio, and Jerry King of West Palm Beach, Fla.; three grandchildren, Robert Moore and Jessica and Amanda Weishaar; a great-grandson, Colton Moore; a sister-in-law, Audrey King; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by: her parents; a son, Bennett; and two brothers, John and Dick King.
Services: 1 p.m. Friday at the Salvation Army Citadel, Waterloo. Her body was cremated.

Evelyn F. Mikkelsen (1915-2008)
CEDAR FALLS -- Evelyn F. Mikkelsen, 92, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, March 11, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home of natural causes.
She was born Nov. 10, 1915, in Reinbeck, daughter of William and Sophia Noltensmier Frahm. She married Miller Mikkelsen Jr. on Oct. 5, 1943, in Chicago. He died March 5, 2005.
Mrs. Mikkelsen graduated from Randalia High School, Randalia, and was a hairstylist for several years.
Survived by: a daughter, Linda Kuhn of Cedar Falls; a son, Craig Mikkelsen of Cedar Falls; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Izetta Warnke of Strawberry Point.

Helen I. Schuler (1926-2008)
WATERLOO -- Helen I. Schuler, 81, of Waterloo, died Monday, March 10, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, of natural causes.
She was born June 29, 1926, in Chicago, daughter of Hugo and Ida Krause Miller. On June 29, 1951, she married Theodore A. "Ted" Schuler at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waterloo.
Mrs. Schuler graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1947, then worked at Cutler Hardware as a bookkeeper for eight years. She retired from Martin Brothers Distributing in the 1980s, where she had been employed as a bookkeeper. She was a 4-H leader for 10 years and also taught Sunday School at Christ Lutheran Church.
Survived by: her husband; a son, Lee A. of Aurora, Ill.; a daughter, Janice (David) Chung of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren, Jedidiah and Jonathan, both in the U.S. Army, Joy of Iowa City, and Joshua, Jennifer, Jason, Jaylee and Josie Chung, all of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Walter (Nikki) Miller of Dunkerton and Otto (JoAnn) Miller of Janesville.
Preceded in death by: her parents, and a brother, Vernon Miller.

Robert L. "Bob" Floden (1943-2008)
NEW HAMPTON -- Robert Lee "Bob" Floden, 64, of New Hampton, died at home Tuesday, March 11.
He was born July 11, 1943, in Waverly, son of John and Irma Foster Floden. On June 20, 1969, he married Wilda Smith in Michigan, and they later divorced.
Mr. Floden graduated from Sumner High School in 1961, then served in the U.S. Air Force. He was an electrician for 25 years with the former Sara Lee, New Hampton, and worked for five more years at Sparboe, also in New Hampton.
Survived by: his life partner, Glenda Blackwell of New Hampton; a daughter, Tina Slinger of Charles City; a son, Jamie (Lyndee) of New Hampton; Glenda's children, Phillip and Milissa Thomas, both of Alta Vista, and Jerrod Blackwell of New Hampton; five grandchildren; his former wife, Wilda Phillips of Story City; his father of Sumner; three brothers, Ronald, David and Jon; and four sisters, Merri, Pat, Diane and Donna.

Louise A. Hagen (1925-2008)
ELDORA -- Louise A. Hagen, 82, of Eldora, died Monday, March 10, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, of natural causes.
She was born Aug. 24, 1925, in Carbon, daughter of Cleveland Henry "C.H." and Louise Anna Wendt Johannes. On July 20, 1952, she married Marvin O. Hagen at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Waverly.
She graduated from Corning High School in 1942. She then continued her education at Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Neb., receiving a teaching certificate in 1945. While in Waverly she taught in a one-room school for seven years and substituted for two years at St. Paul Lutheran Artesian.
Survived by: her husband; a son, M. Allen (Stephanie) of Puyallup, Wash.; three granddaughters; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Fredericka "Fritzie" Nelson.
Preceded in death by: a sister, Clara Loesch.

WAVERLY -- Ailene Ruth Philp-Olmstead, 94, of Waverly, died Sunday, March 9, at Bartels Lutheran Home, Waverly, of natural causes.
She was born July 7, 1913, in Ellsworth, daughter of James and Laura Ahrens Allen. She married Donald Philp on Oct. 12, 1935, in Stanhope. He died Oct. 13, 1980. She later married Elton Olmsted on Oct. 31, 1981, in Waterloo. He died Feb. 1, 2008.
Survived by: a son, James (Donna) Philp of Raymond; two daughters, Aileen (Louis) Day-Diegel of Rockford, Ill., and Marilyn Gardner of Melbourne, Fla.; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Edwin Blair of Storm Lake; and a sister, Mary Lee Shortell of Branson, Mo.
Preceded in death by: a granddaughter.

Michael Kauffman (1956-2008)
SUMNER -- Michael Kauffman, 51, of Sumner, died Tuesday, March 11, at Hillcrest Home, Sumner, after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 21, 1956, in Fayette County, son of Orson and Betty Culbertson Kauffman.
He graduated from Sumner High School in 1975 and helped his father with Kauffman Limousine Ranch, Lebanon, Mo., for 23 years.
Survived by: his father of Sumner; two brothers, Morrie of Waterloo and Monte of Prosper, Texas; and three sisters, Marlys Thomas of Lebanon, Mavis Kauffman of New Hampton and Marlene (Charles) Dial of Osage Beach, Mo.
Preceded in death by: his mother.

Florence E. Norman-Behrends (1915-2008)
CLARKSVILLE -- Florence E. Norman-Behrends, 93, of Clarksville Community Nursing Home, died Sunday, March 9, at Waverly Medical Center, Waverly, from complications of old age.
She was born Feb. 26, 1915, on the family home in Mount Zion, daughter of Micheal Edward and Mayme Mae McCarty. She married Lowell S. Norman on March 17, 1931. He died in September 1968. She later married Ben Behrends, and he preceded her in death.
She and her husband farmed in Rose Hill before moving to Dumont in 1951. She worked as an assistant buyer for Younkers Department Store, and in 1965 went to work for Bell Telephone Co., Des Moines, retiring in 1980.
Survived by: a son, Stan (Adela) Norman of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three daughters, A. Maxine Vaux of Ottumwa, Violet Mitchell of Riverside, Calif., and Dixie Roll of Nashua; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a daughter, Betty Sudbrock; six brothers, John, Walter, Francis, Mike, Floyd and an infant; and three sisters, Bertha Humphrey, Gertrude Norman and an infant.

She was born March 29, 1921, in Grundy Center, daughter of Charles and Flora Parker Yoder. She graduated from Grundy Center High School. She was employed at Grundy National Bank from 1947 to 1989 and had served as head of the Easter Seal Society and head of Red Cross work in Grundy County.

She was born June 14, 1923, near Fern, daughter of Jacob and Ella Syhlman Everts. She married Harlon Eckhoff on Jan. 11, 1947, at Little Brown Church, Nashua.
She was a waitress for several years at area restaurants.
Survived by: her husband; two daughters, Linda (Jim) Sterling of Liberty, Mo., and LuAnn (Tom) Ray of Cedar Falls; four sons, Kenneth (Sharon) and Calvin (Cindy), both of Cedar Falls, Wayne (Karen Gray) of Waterloo and Wendell (Sue) of Stewartville, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lester (Hazel) Everts of Cedar Falls; and a sister, Tina (Warren) Berhends of Traer.

Wilma R. Engelkes (1913-2008)
CEDAR FALLS -- Wilma Ruth Engelkes, 94, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Grundy Center, died Thursday, March 13, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo.
She was born Nov. 2, 1913, in Parkersburg, daughter of George and Anna Mead Johnson. Her mother died during the flu of 1918 and her grandparents and great-aunt, Mr. & Mrs. W. S. Mead and Anna Bush Bailey, raised her. She married Harold W. Engelkes on Sept. 23, 1937. He preceded her in death in August 1995.
She graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1931 and attended Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) and received a teaching certificate. She taught school for several years in rural Grundy County and Fern.
Mrs. Engelkes and her husband co-owned and operated Engelkes Funeral Home. She was a proofreader at the Spokesman Press for more than seven years and then at the Grundy Register for more than 20 years, retiring in 1998.
Survived by: two daughters, Anna Maxine Engelkes of Cedar Falls and Carol Madelle (Dan) Brobst of Hudson.
Preceded in death by: an infant daughter, Lois Sue; an infant sister, Marie Johnson.

Norbert J. "Red" "Buck" Zweibohmer (1929-2008)
OSSIAN -- Norbert John "Red" "Buck" Zweibohmer, 79, of Ossian, died Wednesday, March 12, at Winneshiek Medical Center, Decorah, following a long illness.
He was born Feb. 14, 1929, south of Ossian, son of John C. and Justina C. Klemmer Zweibohmer. In December 1951 he married Francis Kerr Bentz in New Hampton. She died Sept. 22, 1994.
Mr. Zweibohmer served in the U.S. Army in Tokyo. He was an over-the-road trucker for 35 years; having worked 30 years for Warren Transport of Waterloo.
Survived by: a stepson, William (Janelle) Bentz of Waterloo; a stepgrandson and three stepgreat-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marie Monroe of Ossian and Corrine (Ralph) Lensing of Festina.
Preceded in death by: a stepson, Terrence; special friend, Wanda Casper; two sisters, an infant, and Marcie Hinders; and two brothers: Arthur and Leonard.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Ossian, with burial and military rites at 3:30 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery, Waterloo. Public visitation from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Schmitz Funeral Home, Ossian, is in charge of arrangements.
