Nichols, Clayton Charles
WISCONSIN DELLS
Clayton Charles Nichols, 88, went to be with the Lord on March 17, 2009. Clay was born in Adams County on Dec. 6, 1920. He was the son of Roy and Della (Ward) Nichols. Clay grew up on the farm his father founded, and graduated from Wisconsin Dells High School in 1938. After studying at University of Wisconsin -- Stout, Clay worked in San Diego at the Bechtel aircraft plant, then in Milwaukee. Clay returned to Adams County to run the farm his father had started in 1906. He married his faithful and loving wife Leona Louise Baraga on Sept. 15, 1945 and they raised five children on the family farm. Clay's passions were agriculture, politics, travel, antique cars and his family, which he affectionately referred to as his "quarters' worth of Nichols." In 1961, Clay was one of 32 people representing Wisconsin agriculture in a good will "People to People" tour. The delegation toured through Russia and Eastern Europe, and passed through East Berlin just nine days before the Berlin Wall went up. Afterward, Clay presented the story and slides from this tour to more than 100 local groups. In the early 1960s Clay was president of the Wisconsin Livestock Board. There, he worked with Gov. Reynolds to form the "July is Beef Month" promotion in Wisconsin. Clay ran for State Assembly in 1962, and narrowly lost in the strongly Republican Adams County. In the 1970s, Clay served as Wisconsin director of the National Corn Growers Association, and helped set up the bylaws and articles to found the organization. After he helped establish the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association, he served as president for seven years. In 1978, Clay was honored to receive the University of Wisconsin College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Master Agriculturist Award. In 1979, Clay represented the National Corn Growers at a World Food Seminar in Taipei, Taiwan. Locally, Clay served on the Adams County Fair Board, the County Development Board, Board of Adjustment, and on the Kilbourn Co-op Board for 25 years. He was an honorary member of the Adams County Hospital Memorial Healthcare Foundation. As a Rotarian, Clay was proud to win the Paul Harris Award for community service. With his fellow Rotarians, he served the Dells community by barbequing beef for the Wo-zha-Wa Festival for 26 consecutive years. Clay pursued his hobby of restoring antique cars with the same level of dedication he gave to agriculture. He restored five 1934 Fords, and three Lincoln Zephyrs, winning three prestigious Ford Dearborn Awards. He and Lee enjoyed touring the country in the cars, attending meetings and making life-long friendships. To prove that his cars were truly roadworthy, he participated in three Great American Race cross-country road rallies, and he is a charter member of the GAR. Clay was a folksy writer who liked to tell a story. He enjoyed having his stories printed in local newspapers, antique car magazines and farming journals. In 2007, he published a book of his articles, entitled "The View From Here." Clay was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Kenneth; his brother, Donald; and sister, Marion Natvig. He is survived by his loving wife Lee and children Patricia Harrington of Sun Prairie, Kendal (Marci) Nichols of Wisconsin Dells, Janet Nichols of Winter Park, Fla., Barbara (Michael) Morkri of Blue Mounds and Carrie (Jeffrey) Hoye of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Megan Nichols and Gunnar Morkri; step-grandchildren, Matthew (Bryanny) Weigel and Nathan (Emily) Weigel; great-grandchildren, Joe, Andrew and Macy; his sister, Helen Lowe of Adams; and numerous loving nieces, nephews and friends from around the world. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at noon on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at the DAVIS CORNERS CHURCH, 660 County Road I, Wisconsin Dells, 53965. Wear your bolo tie to celebrate Clay's final journey. Ellie's first trip outside North America was in Spring of 1986, when she accompanied her grandson, Adam, to Varanasi and Agra, India, and Kathmandu, Nepal, chaperoned by her son and daughter-in-law who were studying there. She and her husband Paul later traveled to Switzerland and Germany to visit family and learn about their cultural heritage. They married on Nov. 22, 1944 in Lincoln, Neb. while Paul was on leave from serving as a B-17 pilot in World War 2. After the war Ellie and Paul moved to Ames, Iowa, where Paul enrolled in veterinary medicine at Iowa State University and Ellie worked on the obstetrics floor at Mary Greeley Hospital. Their oldest child Ted was born in Ames, Iowa. After Paul's graduation from Iowa State in 1949, the family moved to Pipestone, Minn. where Paul went into veterinary practice. Ellie and Paul had two more children while residing in Pipestone, Thomas and Teresa. In 1957 Ellie began work as a public school nurse and did this for the next 10 years. In 1968 Paul started work with the Department of Agriculture and Paul's transfer took them to Sioux Falls, S.D. where Ellie worked with the Visiting Nurse Service. In August 1973 Paul's job brought them to Madison and Ellie was hired that month by the Madison City Health Department where she worked until 1988. In her career as a nurse, and as a warm and caring friend and confidant, Ellie Pinkert touched many, many lives.
