AARP in Your State

September 2009

Talk plus action — Experts on a variety of issues are touring the state this month to lead discussions about the economic crisis, federal health care reform and state funding for services that can help people remain in their homes as they age. The discussions will include information on what average citizens can do about these issues.

Sponsored by AARP Colorado, the two-hour daytime events will be held in Colorado Springs and Pueblo on Sept. 14; Durango, Sept. 15; Gunnison, Sept. 16; Fort Collins, Sept. 17; and Boulder, Sept. 18. The events are free, and reservations are not required. For a complete schedule with dates, times and locations, visit www.aarp.org/co or call 1-866-554-5376 toll-free.

Make a difference — With the economic crisis giving new urgency to the need for better health care coverage and financial security, AARP Colorado is seeking volunteers to push for bipartisan legislation to achieve those goals. Volunteers will speak with elected officials and represent AARP at events to bolster support for state and federal legislation addressing the issues.

"They'll be working for social change," says Laura Bauman, AARP associate state director for community outreach.

Volunteers are also needed at the AARP Pueblo Information Center. Training and support will be provided for all roles. To volunteer, e-mail coaarp@aarp.org or call 1-866-554-5376 toll-free.

Job search tools — AARP Colorado is promoting WorkSearch, a free service that can help job seekers age 40 and older, particularly in the Pueblo area, one of the most economically depressed parts of the state. Volunteers at the Pueblo AARP Information Center are trained to use the AARP WorkSearch Assessment System to help workers evaluate their skills, locate training opportunities and gather job-market information.

By 2010, one in three workers nationwide will be 50-plus. WorkSearch aims to help older workers stay competitive. For appointments in Pueblo, call 719-543-8876 or e-mail info2cent@yahoo.com. AARP also runs WorkSearch sites in Colorado Springs and Denver. For more information, visit www.aarpworksearch.org.
