Summertime fun: Choices abound, so there's No reason for kids to be idle

By Jamar Younger

Mar. 20, 2008 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) --
Sahuarita and East Side-area children will have plenty of opportunities this summer to learn how to rope a calf, throw a punch or sharpen their financial-planning skills.

The Star's list of summer programs presents numerous options for families who want to get a head start in planning their children's summer.

Some programs promote physical activity, while others cater to a child's creative or scientific side.

This list is extensive, but it might not include all the programs available in your area.

Children can gain some intangible skills in addition to the ones listed in the program descriptions.

For example, the horse and roping camps at Just Horsin' Around in Vail teach children how to do more than just ride horses.

It's also a good physical activity that helps children build confidence, said Candace Jepson.

Jepson and her husband, Richard, own the camp.

"I think riding horses makes children calmer, and it's a really happy thing," she said. "If your child comes to camp and they're capable, they'll learn a lot."
