Nov. 4, 2009 (McClatchy-Tribune Regional News delivered by Newstex) -- Kayleigh Kresse of Mountain View improved her second-day score by 15 strokes on her way to adding a 5A-II girls golf super regional championship.
After firing an opening-round 88 on Monday, Kresse was trailing Glendale Deer Valley's (OTCBB:DVLY) Jessika Byrn by three strokes entering Tuesday's final round at Silverbell Golf Course.
But Kresse (161) made up for an off day in the first round by slicing 15 strokes from her first-day tally, finishing with a 73 in the final round. Byrn (169) compiled an 84 and an 85.
Kresse's last round, combined with a 77 from teammate Melissa Olson, paved the way for Mountain View to take the team super regional crown. The Mountain Lions owned a two-day total of 697, 44 strokes better than runner-up Deer Valley (741).
Tucson's Derek Laporte (137) was 7 under par over the last two days, but came in second to Chandler Hamilton's C.J. Kim (132) in one of the two 5A-I boys super regionals at Phoenix's Maryvale Golf Course.
Salpointe Catholic's Ricky Lee also went under par at Maryvale, coming through with a two-day score of 138 -- 6 under par -- only to finish one stroke behind Chris Felix (137) of Phoenix Mountain Pointe.
The Salpointe boys finished third as a team.
The Lancer girls came in second in their super regional at Tempe's Ken McDonald Golf Course. But it was a distance second -- 100 strokes behind Chandler Hamilton.
The Ironwood Ridge boys also were second in their 5A-II super regional at Aguila Golf Course. Alex McMahon came in third overall.
