Health care overhaul

AARP is doing a great job of covering the health reform issues [“Health Care Reform Taking Shape,” July-August]. I would like to add this:

It amazes me how easily Congress spent well over a trillion dollars for the war in Iraq and again to bail out banks, but when it comes to health care for the people, right away hurricanes and tornadoes of opposition start to blow.—David Hill, Apopka, Fla.

Regarding A. Barry Rand’s “Health Reform Now” [Where We Stand]: Shouldn’t we be asking, What is the cost and who will pay for it?

We are in this great government giveaway. Here is a stimulus for you, for me, for all of us. Now here is another one. Keep those checks coming in.

Does anyone give a thought to who will pay for all of this “pie in the sky”? Our children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren will, for years to come. (If our country is still solvent.)—Paul Dodge, Port Orange, Fla.

Preying on the weak

The article on elder abuse [“Tempting Targets”] really hit home. My 84-year-old father, who had Alzheimer’s, was exploited by his caregiver and landlord. He died alone and penniless.

My advice? Listen to your instincts. If you are feeling uneasy, step in. Obtain power of attorney and, if need be, become a guardian.—Luci Gallardo, El Paso, Texas

Joys of dance

I hope many people read Carol Wiseman’s essay “What I Really Know About Freedom” and follow in her footsteps of learning to dance. I started Argentine tango lessons three years ago during a very difficult time in my life. It soothed my nerves and saved my sanity.—Eileen Pall, Kendall Park, N.J.

Job retraining

The “Fresh Start” article on laid-off workers was most informative. It does appear that Michigan’s No Worker Left Behind program is a model for the nation in job retraining.

However, the unions were conspicuously absent from any mention. Was this an oversight?—Richard Mahoney, Bonaire, Ga.

Editor’s Note: Unions in Michigan are actively involved, advising workers on how to connect with the program and how to apply for tuition grants.
